Are we still dangerously unprepared?

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Three and a half years have passed since 9/11, but can America prevent or respond to another catastrophic attack at home? How safe are we from an attack on Indian Point? 

Security expert Dr. Stephen E. Flynn will argue that we are still unprepared in a premier event on April 7, 2005, at 7:00 p.m. in the Judicial Institute Lecture Hall at Pace Law School, 78 North Broadway in White Plains. ABC Eyewitness News anchor Tim Fleischer will be the moderator for the event, cosponsored by Pace Law School and the Westchester County Business Journal. Admission is free of charge and open to the public.

In his lecture, “America the Vulnerable: Securing the Neglected Home Front,” Flynn will argue that despite increased awareness, there are a vast number of soft targets that lie exposed to our enemies: water and food supplies; chemical plants and pipelines; bridges, tunnels and ports; and cargo containers that carry goods throughout our country. He will outline a bold yet practical plan for achieving security in a safe, smart manner that is likewise effective and manageable.

Flynn, a Connecticut resident, is the author of the critically acclaimed and national bestseller America the Vulnerable. He is the inaugural occupant of the Jeane J. Kirkpatrick Chair in National Security Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. Flynn served as director and principal author for the task force report “America: Still Unprepared—Still in Danger,” cochaired by former Senators Gary Hart and Warren Rudman. Since 9/11 he has provided congressional testimony on homeland security matters on 12 occasions.

He spent 20 years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Coast Guard including two commands at sea, served in the White House Military Office during the George H.W. Bush administration and was director for Global Issues on the National Security Council staff during the Clinton administration. He holds a PhD and MALD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and a BS from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
