About the Speaker

Mark D. Welton, JSD, is Professor of International and Comparative Law, and is the Program Director for the major in International and Comparative Legal Studies. His main area of academic interest is Islamic law and jurisprudence; he also studies comparative constitutional law and the legal system of the European Union.

He has presented on the subject of Islamic law on numerous occasions including "The Development of Islamic Law from the End of the Classical Period to the Present," Great Hall Series, New York City Bar Association (panel presentation, November 6, 2006), Foreign and Comparative Law Committee, New York City Bar Association (presentation, New York, January 10, 2006), "Islam and the Rule of Law," 4th Annual CLE, New York National Guard (presentation, New York, April 26, 2006), "Contemporary Problems in Islamic Law," Royal Netherlands Army Staff College (lecture, Breda, the Netherlands, October 18, 1991), Canadian Judge Advocate General’s Corps Legal Program (lecture, Ottawa, March 11, 1991), College of William and Mary Law School (semiannual guest lecturer, Comparative Law course, Williamsburg, Virginia, 1990-91).

Dr. Welton’s publications include Illuminating Islamic Jurisprudence: The Origins and Practice of Islamic Law Worldwide  (Thomson, 2006) (co-author), "Islam and Power," 5(A) Modern Legal Systems Cyclopedia  130.5 (Kenneth R. Reddon, gen. ed.) (William S. Hine & Co., 1990), and "When Mosque and State Merge: Lessons from the Global War on Terrorism," Church & State (April 2005) (co-author).
