The registration form should be accompanied by the team registration fee of $350, by check made payable to Pace University School of Law, Environmental Law Moot Court Competition. The registration fee covers most meals, including continental breakfasts, lunches and an evening reception. Teams are responsible for their travel arrangements, hotel expenses and some meals. Registration for the Competition runs from May 1, 2001 to October 13, 2001and is limited to one team per school. Acceptance is based strictly on a "first come, first served" basis. Registrations received after October 13th will be accepted at the discretion of the National Environmental Law Moot Court Board. The legal problem drafted each year involves timely issues of national importance to the practice of environmental law. Past topics have included illegal dumping and the criminal liability of corporate officers for environmental violations by their companies. Scoring in this competition is based on a combination of the brief score and scores from the oral rounds. The Competition problem and rules will be distributed by mail on approximately October 13, 2001 to all schools that have paid in full by October 13th.After that date, the problem, the rules and other relevant materials for the Competition will also be posted on the Pace Website. Students write their briefs for each of the respective parties’ legal position in November. Briefs must be postmarked to Pace University School of law School no later than December 3, 2001. Teams will serve their briefs on the other teams via a posting of the briefs on the Pace Website. Each school must e-mail a copy of the brief (NOT the measuring brief) by December 3, 2001 to the Program Administrator, Carole Speight. Meeting this deadline will constitute fulfillment of the obligation to serve opposing teams. A page will be created on the Pace Website with links to all the teams' briefs (identified only by the team number). On December 10, 2001, Ms. Speight will send the team contact persons the password and login information for access to the briefs. The content, legal analysis and accuracy of the briefs are graded by practicing attorneys in both the private and public sectors, many of whom are on the staffs of state and federal environmental regulatory agencies. Oral arguments begin with the preliminary rounds on Thursday, February 21,2002 and conclude with the final round on Saturday afternoon, February 23rd.The form for all rounds features three adverse teams (reflecting the fact that environmental litigation frequently involves multiple parties). Teams are judged based on their performance in the preliminary rounds and the succeeding quarterfinal and semi-final rounds. Judges evaluating the oral arguments will be attorneys with environmental law expertise, members of the Pace environmental law faculty and judges from the nation’s courts. Final round judges will be members of the federal bench and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Appeals Board. Awards are conferred on the winners in each of the following categories:
