Synopsis of Karin Sheldon's Lecture:
Critics of the Endangered Species Act’s restrictions on private land development point to the federal lands as the appropriate place to protect and preserve wildlife. These critics contend that publicly owned lands should assume the burden of preventing species extinction, thereby relieving private property owners of responsibility for imperiled wildlife.
The federal lands of the United States do support significant wildlife, both endangered and common. This resource is of inestimable value to the nation, and part of our national culture and identity. However, there are major ecological and legal barriers to effective wildlife conservation on the public lands. This lecture will explore the question of whether the federal lands provide an opportunity to get ahead of the species extinction crisis and to sustain our wildlife heritage into the future.
