About the Speaker
José Alvarez comes to Pace Law School as a visiting scholar
from Columbia Law School, where he is the Hamilton Fish Professor of
International Law and Diplomacy. He is also the founder and director
of Columbia’s Center on Global Legal Problems.
Professor Alvarez was in private practice at Shea & Gardner from
1982 to 1983 and then served as an attorney-adviser, U.S. Department
of State, Office of the Legal Adviser, from 1983 to 1988. He has
taught at Georgetown University Law Center, George Washington
University, National Law Center, the University of Michigan Law
School, and Columbia University.
He serves on the Board of Editors for the American Journal of
International Law and the Journal of International Criminal Justice
and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Department
of State Advisory Committee on International Law. Professor Alvarez
is also president-elect of the American Society of International
Law.
